Jessica showed me twelve messages sent less than an hour after she left my father. The anonymous sender knew where they had eaten, what Jessica had worn, and even where she worked. The messages claimed my father was still emotionally married to my mother and warned Jessica to “stay away from what belongs to someone else.” Then she showed me the final photograph. It had been taken through the restaurant window while Dad and Jessica were having dinner.

We compared the messages with screenshots from two women Dad had dated previously. The wording was almost identical. With their permission, we documented everything and helped Dad report the harassment. The number eventually led back to someone none of us expected—my mother’s younger sister, Elaine. She had remained unusually close to Dad after Mom died, bringing casseroles, remembering anniversaries, and insisting she was merely “looking after family.”

When confronted, Elaine finally admitted she had developed feelings for him years earlier. Every time Dad began seeing someone, she became terrified he would build a new life that no longer included her. She had gotten details about his dates because Dad innocently told her where he was going. Then she searched for the women online and frightened them into disappearing. Dad looked more devastated than angry.

He cut contact with Elaine and personally apologized to the women who had been dragged into the situation. Jessica never dated him again—she reminded me repeatedly that she had only agreed as a favor—but months later Dad met someone new named Carol. This time, nobody knew the restaurant, the hour, or even her last name until he was ready to share it. Their relationship developed slowly. The strangest part was realizing Dad had spent months believing seven women had independently rejected him overnight. In reality, somebody he trusted had been closing every door before he had a chance to walk through it.
