Airport security reached me before Dominic did. I showed them Mateo’s note and explained that I no longer felt comfortable traveling. One officer escorted me to a quieter area while another remained near the gate. I called my attorney and asked her to review every document Dominic had recently convinced me to sign. Within hours, she found something alarming: paperwork granting him broad financial authority after the sale of my home, along with documents connected to a coastal assisted-living facility I had never agreed to enter.

The “black square” finally made sense when Mateo’s mother called me that evening. He had overheard Dominic discussing a secured memory-care wing at the facility, identifiable on the floor plan by a black access-control box beside the entrance. Dominic had told people my memory was declining and that I would eventually “settle down once she couldn’t leave whenever she wanted.” The apartment by the ocean had never existed.

My attorney immediately revoked the financial authority I had signed, notified my bank, and requested copies of every transaction Dominic had attempted using my name. Nothing irreversible had been completed yet. The money from my home sale remained protected, but records showed Dominic had already contacted the facility about paying a large entrance fee directly from my account.

I stayed with my sister for several weeks while everything was reviewed. Dominic insisted he had only been trying to protect me, but protection does not require lies, secret paperwork, or frightening a nine-year-old into warning his grandmother. Mateo eventually admitted he had drawn the black square because he had seen the facility brochure hidden in Dominic’s desk. That tiny folded note changed the rest of my life. I never boarded the plane, never entered that facility, and never again signed anything simply because my son told me it was “for my own good.”
