Caleb opened the leather folder and placed a recorded deed on the little table. He explained that he now worked in elder-law and estate litigation. Two weeks earlier, Derek had emailed him asking whether Renee could refinance the property without involving me. That question bothered him enough to pull the county records. According to those records, ownership had supposedly been transferred from me to Renee eighteen months earlier—with my signature at the bottom.

I stared at the page. I had never signed it. Eighteen months earlier, I had been recovering from surgery and could barely leave my bedroom. Caleb already had copies of my original deed and my late husband’s estate documents. The house had been purchased by us decades earlier and had passed entirely to me after his death. Derek had no authority to give it away. Caleb had come home because he wanted to hear the truth from me before accusing anyone.

Derek stopped shouting. Renee insisted the transfer had been my idea and claimed I had simply forgotten. Caleb calmly photographed my living space, collected my medical records with my permission, and contacted another attorney so he would not personally handle a case involving his own parents. The questionable deed and notarization were formally challenged, and the proposed refinancing was stopped while ownership was reviewed.

Months later, the transfer was set aside and the title returned to me. Derek and Renee moved out after the proper legal process. I moved back into my own bedroom—the one Renee had been using while telling people the house belonged to her. Caleb never bragged about what he had done. He simply repaired the heater in the back room and helped me turn it into a real guest suite. My son had assumed age made me powerless. What he had forgotten was that records remember what families sometimes hope an old woman will forget.
