“If you are reading this, you came looking for what I left you before you came looking for me.” According to my attorney, Katherine read that sentence twice. The letter explained that after Christmas Eve, I had finally stopped planning my estate around children who treated my death like a financial event. I had not hidden money illegally or emptied anything that belonged to them. I had simply changed what happened to assets that were still mine.

The lake property had been transferred into a charitable trust supporting widows and seniors living alone. Harold’s investment accounts now funded education trusts for the grandchildren, structured so their parents could not withdraw the principal. I sold the large family house and used part of the proceeds to purchase a small coastal apartment in my own name. The rest went into accounts designed to support me for however many years I had left.

My children were furious because they had already divided everything mentally. Simon had apparently planned to sell the lake property. Katherine expected the house. Bridget had been counting on investment money to clear her mortgage. None of them had ever discussed those plans with me because they assumed inheritance was guaranteed simply because they were my children.

For nearly six months, I did not answer their demands. Eventually, Bridget sent the first message containing no mention of money. She wrote, “I’m sorry we left you alone that Christmas.” Katherine and Simon took longer. I did not rush toward reconciliation, but I did not close the door forever either. I spent that following Christmas beside the ocean with Harold’s photograph, one candle, and dinner prepared for exactly one person. For the first time in years, an empty chair did not make me feel abandoned. It reminded me that peace was something I was finally allowed to choose.
