That night, after the girls were asleep, I opened Josephine’s envelope. Inside was a letter naming me as her preferred guardian if anything happened to her, along with the contact information for an attorney she had met privately. Josephine knew a parent’s wishes would not decide custody by themselves, but she wanted the court to understand why she believed the girls needed protection. Her final sentence read, “Please keep them together, Dad. Victor has already chosen the life he wants.”

The blue notebook explained what she meant. For almost a year, Josephine had recorded dates, bank transfers, missed school events, and conversations Victor had held with Diane while Josephine was undergoing treatment. Several entries described Victor discussing selling the family home once Josephine died and using part of the proceeds toward a new property with Diane. The old phone contained voice messages in which Victor complained that raising three daughters would interfere with travel and called temporary placement “the easiest transition.”

I contacted Josephine’s attorney the following morning. We preserved the notebook, copied the recordings, and began the proper guardianship process. More importantly, Josephine had placed her share of the home, life-insurance proceeds, and savings into a trust for Iris, Willa, and Poppy. Victor could not simply redirect those assets into his new marriage. The trust appointed an independent professional trustee and specifically protected money for housing, education, and the girls’ care.

When Victor learned about the documents, his confidence disappeared. He denied abandoning his daughters, but his own messages and recordings made that explanation difficult. Diane ended their engagement within weeks, apparently unwilling to begin married life surrounded by lawyers and custody hearings. The girls remained with me while the court reviewed everything and eventually approved a stable arrangement keeping them together. Josephine could not choose what happened after her death. But she had made certain her daughters would not enter that future without evidence, protection, or someone prepared to fight for them.
