My sister could barely get the words out. “Mom lied to you. She secretly kept every letter we sent.” I stared at her, certain I had misunderstood. For twenty years, I believed none of my siblings wanted anything to do with me. Whenever I mailed birthday cards or tried calling the old house, there was never a response. Eventually, I stopped trying. My sister explained that Mom had intercepted everything. She told them I had abandoned the family because I thought I was better than them. Whenever one of them asked for my address, Mom claimed she didn’t know where I lived.

Then my sister handed me a plastic grocery bag filled with envelopes. My handwriting was on nearly every one. Some had never been opened. Others contained photographs, holiday cards, and letters I had written during the first ten years after leaving. My sister had discovered them while helping Mom clean out a closet after she became ill. At the bottom of the bag was a notebook. Mom had recorded every attempt I made to contact the family, along with the excuses she had given my siblings afterward.

I finally asked the question that had followed me for two decades: why? My sister said Mom had always resented me for leaving. As the oldest child, I had spent most of my teenage years cooking, babysitting, and helping raise everyone else. When I graduated, Mom expected me to keep working and contributing to the household instead of building a life of my own. My leaving felt like betrayal to her, so she decided everyone else should believe I had abandoned them too.

Two days later, I walked into the house I had left twenty years earlier. Six of my siblings were waiting inside. Nobody knew what to say at first. Then my youngest brother—five when I left—hugged me and whispered, “I thought you forgot us.”

I hadn’t.

And for the first time in twenty years, they finally knew that.
