The cake said, “Congrats on 3 years—now let’s open things up!” For several seconds, I genuinely thought it was some terrible joke. Then I looked at my boyfriend, and instead of laughing, he gave me this nervous little smile. He explained that the “special surprise” was his idea of taking our relationship to the next level—by making it an open relationship. Apparently, he had been reading about couples who dated other people while staying together, and he thought our anniversary was the perfect time to suggest it. I stared at him and asked whether there was already someone else.

His silence answered before he did. Eventually, he admitted there was a woman from his gym he had been talking to for months. Nothing “physical” had happened yet, according to him, but she already knew about his plan. That was the part that ended everything for me. He hadn’t brought me into a conversation about our relationship. He had discussed our boundaries with another woman first, then brought me to an expensive restaurant expecting me to celebrate his decision over cake.

I stood up, placed enough cash on the table to cover my meal, and told him we were finished. He followed me outside insisting I was misunderstanding him. He kept saying that asking for an open relationship wasn’t the same as cheating. I agreed. But secretly preparing another person for the moment your partner finally “agrees” felt like he had already started building a second relationship while I was still planning our future.

The next morning, I returned the dress I had bought because I thought he might propose. He sent flowers that afternoon and called repeatedly for nearly a week. I never changed my mind.

I went into that restaurant expecting a ring.

Instead, a slice of cake told me everything I needed to know.
