The moment their car disappeared, I canceled every reservation still under my name: the hotel, airport transfer, museum passes, countryside tour, and restaurant deposits. Most were refundable because I had deliberately booked flexible rates. I did not touch their flights. If they wanted Europe without me, they were perfectly free to have Europe without me. They would simply have to pay for it themselves.

Nine hours later, my phone began vibrating. First Dad. Then Mom. Then Daria six times. The driver they expected at arrivals had never appeared, and when they finally reached the boutique hotel, the receptionist explained that the reservation had been canceled by the person who booked and paid for it. Mom left a furious voicemail demanding that I “fix the misunderstanding immediately.”

I called back once. Dad answered. Behind him, I could hear Daria arguing about hotel prices. Mom grabbed the phone and accused me of ruining their vacation. I reminded her that I had purchased a family trip for three people: my parents and me. They had replaced me without asking, so I had withdrawn the gift. “You told me Daria needed rest,” I said calmly. “I hope she enjoys it. You’ll just be financing it yourselves.”

They found another hotel that evening, though it cost considerably more than they expected. Meanwhile, I used part of the refunded money to book myself a five-day trip to Lisbon the following month. When Mom later said I had embarrassed the family, I told her the embarrassment began in their driveway, not in Europe. I never asked them to choose me over Daria again. More importantly, I stopped paying for experiences where my only expected role was providing the credit card.
