The next morning, my key would not turn. A new electronic lock had been installed overnight. I called Gregory immediately, but he sent me straight to voicemail. Then my neighbor Mrs. Bell came outside carrying an envelope she had found near my mailbox. Inside was a property-management agreement listing Tamsin as the “authorized family representative” for my seaside home. According to the paperwork, she had already begun advertising the house as a luxury seasonal rental.

I contacted my attorney before confronting anyone. Within hours, we discovered something worse. Gregory had given Tamsin copies of old insurance documents containing my signature, and someone had used them while preparing paperwork for a home-equity application. Nothing had funded yet, but the application claimed I intended to borrow against the house for “family investment purposes.” I had never approved a loan, a rental business, or anyone else controlling my property.

My attorney notified the lender, the rental platform, and the local police about the disputed documents. Tamsin’s family was required to leave through the proper process, and the electronic lock was removed once my ownership was verified. Gregory finally admitted he had known about the rental plan. He claimed they only wanted to “make the house useful” because I visited a few times each year.

That sentence ended something between us. The house had already been useful. It had given me peace after Ambrose died. It had held twenty years of work, sacrifice, and independence. I changed every access code, moved the deed and financial records into secure storage, and removed Gregory from every document that might give him future authority. Tamsin had called me an extra guest in my own home. What she accidentally revealed was that they had stopped seeing me as the owner long before they changed the lock.
