Nathan’s question was simple: “Mom, what do you mean Alyssa never wanted you there?” He sounded genuinely confused. According to him, Alyssa had repeatedly claimed that I kept changing the plans—removing the stove, shrinking the closet, delaying finishes because I was supposedly “unsure about moving.” I had requested none of those changes. The next morning, Nathan contacted the contractor and asked for every change order connected to the project.

What we found was worse. Alyssa had personally approved several alterations while telling the contractor she was speaking for both of us. My full kitchen had been removed to create space for built-in office cabinets. Part of my storage area had been reassigned to the main house. Even more troubling, nearly $19,000 from the construction account had already paid for electrical work, landscaping, and a patio extension that benefited Nathan and Alyssa’s house—not my suite.

Nathan came to my apartment carrying copies of everything. He looked sick. He admitted Alyssa had convinced him I was becoming difficult and forgetful about the project, so he stopped questioning the constant changes. I did not argue with him. I simply told him my decision was final. The remaining $68,000 would stay with me, and I would not contribute another dollar toward property I did not own.

My condo purchase closed the following month. Nathan later repaid the portion of my money that had been used on his property after he and Alyssa worked out their own financial arrangements. Liam helped me choose curtains for his bedroom and proudly stocked one kitchen drawer with snacks. Alyssa had called my future home “flex space.” In the end, that careless phrase gave me something far more valuable: a home where nobody could shrink my closet, remove my stove, or quietly decide that I no longer belonged.
