Greg’s page was a household budget. Daycare for four days a week came to nearly $1,900 a month. Groceries, utilities, and the extra insurance he expected me to help cover were listed underneath. Beside my name, he had written $750 rent and “childcare savings.” When everything was totaled, my moving into their basement would have saved them more than $2,400 every month while leaving me with barely enough money for medicine, gas, and anything unexpected.

Rachel started crying before I finished reading. She admitted she had known the arrangement felt wrong but had let Greg convince her it was “fair” because I would be living with family. Then Lily had asked why Grandma had to pay money to live “under the house” while also taking care of everyone. Apparently, that simple question had bothered Rachel for days.

Greg looked embarrassed. He said the legal pad was his attempt to calculate what they would actually have gained from me. “I made it sound like you were the one getting helped,” he said. “You weren’t.” He apologized without asking me to reconsider the little house. That mattered more to me than any offer he could have made.

I kept my place by the grain elevator. Rachel began bringing the children over on Sundays, and I watched them when I wanted to, not because my housing depended on it. Sometimes Lily stayed overnight in the second room and called it “Grandma’s tiny house.” By spring, Rachel admitted our relationship had become easier than when we were trying to turn each other into landlord, tenant, and unpaid babysitter. I had worried choosing my own front door would cost me my family. Instead, it taught all of us that love works better when nobody has to earn the right to belong.
