At seven the next morning, Simone discovered her key no longer opened the bridal suite. Maeve and Danny were already inside with me, along with two cousins who had agreed to stand beside me instead. The rings had been moved to my father’s hotel safe, my dress was relocated before breakfast, and the planner had been instructed that Simone, Tori, and the others were no longer members of the wedding party. They were welcome to attend as ordinary guests—if they behaved.

Declan arrived downstairs with something I had not expected. For months, Simone had been sending him increasingly personal messages. He had repeatedly shut her down, assuming she was simply being inappropriate and not wanting to create drama between us. The previous week, however, she had sent him a message suggesting I was “having doubts” and that he deserved someone who understood him better. Declan had saved everything. When I played my recording, his face went white.

Simone confronted me twenty minutes before the ceremony. She demanded to know why her dress, bouquet, and duties had been reassigned. I simply played ten seconds of the recording from my phone. She stopped speaking. Then Declan stepped beside me and told her he had never “almost” chosen her. Every advance she had made had been rejected. Hotel security escorted her from the private wedding area after she began shouting.

At three-thirty, I walked down the aisle exactly as planned. My dress was untouched, the rings were safe, and Maeve stood beside me smiling through tears. We never publicly announced what had happened. I refused to let Simone become the center of our wedding. Months later, I learned she had told people I had “thrown away years of friendship over one drunken conversation.” That was fine. I still had the recording. Simone had been right about one thing: before that night, I had been slow to notice betrayal. By sunrise, I had noticed everything.
