The realtor was the first person to realize something was wrong. Dad had told her the ranch belonged to “the family” and that I had agreed to let Dashiell take over the property after his divorce. The locksmith had been given the same story. I spoke to both through the gate camera and told them clearly that I was the sole owner and had authorized neither a listing nor entry onto the property. The locksmith immediately packed his tools away.

Minutes later, the sheriff arrived. I had contacted his office weeks earlier after Dad began asking neighbors questions about my land, so there was already a record of my concern. I stepped outside with my deed, closing documents, and identification. My attorney—a former JAG officer now in private practice—was already on speakerphone. The county records matched everything I handed over: my name, my purchase, my ranch.

Dad kept insisting, “He’s my son. This is a family matter.”

The sheriff looked at him and said, “Family doesn’t create ownership.”

Nobody was arrested that morning. They were simply told to leave and warned that returning without permission could become a trespassing issue.

Dashiell stared at me from beside the U-Haul.

“So where am I supposed to go?”

I looked at the ranch I had bought after being told I wasn’t welcome for Christmas.
