The woman interviewing me leaned forward, staring at the small silver brooch pinned to my jacket. “Where did you get that?” she asked again. I explained the entire story—the teenage girl, the stolen book, her mother’s grave, and how she had pressed the brooch into my palm before leaving. The interviewer’s eyes filled with tears. She reached into her desk drawer and pulled out an old photograph. In it, she stood beside another woman wearing the exact same brooch. “That was my sister,” she whispered. “She passed away three years ago. That brooch belonged to her.”

I felt my stomach drop. The girl I had helped was her niece. After her mother died, she had bounced between relatives and struggled badly with grief. The book she tried to take from my store had apparently been the novel her mother read every year. She wanted to leave it at the cemetery on what would have been her mother’s birthday. The interviewer told me the brooch was one of the only pieces of jewelry her sister owned, and she had given it to her daughter shortly before she died.

Then the interviewer asked why I had been fired. I told her the truth: my manager said letting a shoplifter leave—even after I personally paid for the book—violated company policy. She sat quietly for several seconds before closing my résumé. I assumed the interview was over. Instead, she smiled and said, “Your résumé tells me what you can do. That story tells me who you are.” She offered me the position before I left the building.

A week later, I returned the brooch to the girl. She refused at first, insisting her mother would have wanted me to keep it. Eventually, we compromised: I would wear it on my first day at the new job, then give it back.

The girl had promised the brooch would save me.

I thought she was simply being kind.

Somehow, she was right.
