In flawless French, I said, “If you’re going to insult my daughter at her own table, at least have the courage to do it in a language she understands.” Gaspard’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth. Solange went completely still. I continued calmly, explaining that I had lived in Bordeaux for nine years, worked, traveled, and built a life there long before either of them had decided I was a woman who had “never experienced the world.”

Then I looked at Rosalind. “Your daughter is not simple,” I told them. “She is kind enough to make people comfortable, and some people mistake kindness for having nothing underneath it.”

Étienne immediately apologized to Rosalind and told his parents their comments were unacceptable. Gaspard tried to claim something had been lost in translation. I almost smiled. “Nothing was lost,” I replied in French. “That’s the problem.”

Solange eventually apologized, but Rosalind did not rush to make everyone comfortable again. She and Étienne decided their wedding would go forward, with one new boundary: disrespect toward either family would no longer be ignored simply to preserve appearances.

Later that evening, Rosalind hugged me and whispered, “Mom, why didn’t you ever tell me you spoke French like that?”

I laughed.

“I think I forgot that version of myself existed.”

That dinner reminded me she still did.
