I looked at Corinne and said, “You should probably ask Braxton whose house he promised you.” Then I closed the door, saved the footage from my doorbell camera, and called an attorney. The house had been left to me by my mother six years earlier and remained titled solely in my name. Braxton lived there as my husband, but he had no authority to simply promise it to another woman. I was not going to throw his belongings onto the lawn or pretend marriage laws disappeared because he cheated. I wanted everything handled properly.

That afternoon, I reviewed our finances. What I found hurt almost as much as the affair. For nearly a year, Braxton had been using marital funds to help pay Corinne’s rent, medical expenses, and vacations while repeatedly telling me we needed to “cut back.” My attorney preserved the records for the divorce and made sure nothing else could quietly disappear.

Braxton came home furious that evening.

“Corinne said you embarrassed her.”

I almost laughed.

“She came to my house and asked me to leave it so she could raise your baby here.”

Then I placed the deed and the financial statements on the table.

Braxton stared at them for a long time.

“You told her this house would be yours after the divorce, didn’t you?”

He said nothing.

That silence was all the answer I needed.
