My full name was printed beneath the legal description of the little white tenant house where I had grown up. Maybelle Louise Garrity. Grantee. I read it three times before I understood. Josephine had transferred the house, the pecan grove behind it, and nearly seven acres surrounding it into my name six months before she died. Winifred explained that the deed had been properly recorded. It was not part of the estate Warren and his brothers were now dividing.

I started crying right there over the courthouse book. Then Winifred handed me another envelope Josephine had left with her attorney. Inside was a short note. She wrote that I had spent twenty-three years caring for her home when her own children lived elsewhere, and that no woman who had given that much of her life should reach old age wondering where she would sleep. The land was not payment, she said. It was gratitude.

The Aldridge brothers learned about the deed two days later. Dalton called first, claiming their mother had been confused. Warren was quieter, but even he asked whether I would consider selling the property back to the family. I refused. Their attorney reviewed the transfer and found no simple way to undo it. Josephine had signed while competent, with independent witnesses, and had made her intentions clear.

I moved into the little white house before winter. Loretta helped me paint the porch, and we repaired the old swing together. I still kept the $250 check Warren gave me that morning, but I never cashed it. It sits inside my kitchen drawer beside Josephine’s note. Twenty-three years of work had ended at a closed screen door with someone telling me I was no longer needed. A week later, I learned Josephine had made certain I would never again need permission to remain on the land I had called home all my life.
