The next morning, my key no longer worked. Vanessa had replaced the locks overnight. I called Gregory, but he sent me straight to voicemail. Then my longtime neighbor approached carrying an envelope she had found near my mailbox. Inside was a property-management agreement naming Vanessa as my “authorized representative.” According to the document, she had already listed my seaside home as a luxury vacation rental for several weeks that summer.

I called my attorney immediately. By afternoon, we uncovered something far worse. Vanessa had used copies of old insurance papers containing my signature to prepare documents connected to a home-equity application. The paperwork claimed I intended to borrow against the property to finance a “family investment.” I had authorized nothing. Gregory had apparently given Vanessa access to my files after convincing himself that I would eventually leave the house to him anyway.

My attorney contacted the lender, the rental platform, and the appropriate local authorities. The loan application was stopped before any money changed hands. Vanessa’s relatives were required to leave through the proper process, and the locks were changed again once my ownership was confirmed. Gregory finally admitted he knew Vanessa wanted to rent the property, although he insisted he knew nothing about the financing documents.

That distinction did not save our relationship. I removed Gregory from every account, emergency authorization, and estate document where I had previously trusted him. I also hired a local property manager who would admit nobody without my written permission. Vanessa had called me an extra guest inside the home I spent decades earning. What she accidentally revealed was much darker: she and my son had begun treating my property as their future possession while I was still alive. They thought my age made me temporary. Instead, their betrayal made their access temporary.
