I told Blake the problem was not one sentence in Italian. It was twelve years of being treated like a bank account while they reserved affection, respect, and gratitude for somebody else. I reminded him that I had co-signed their condo, paid utilities, covered emergencies, and transferred more than $11,000 every year toward their rent. “You are standing on my porch because the money stopped,” I said. “Not because anyone cared that I left my own birthday dinner alone.”

Blake immediately changed tactics. He claimed Corinne had only been emotional and that Odette had “supported them differently.” Then he made his mistake. He said they needed my assistance for another six months because they were preparing to buy a townhouse. I asked how people requiring nearly $950 a month from a sixty-four-year-old widow were planning to qualify for a mortgage. His expression answered before his mouth did.

Two days later, I received an alert from the condo management office. Corinne and Blake had been telling the leasing department that I would guarantee their renewal and cover any increased rent. I sent written notice that I would not sign another lease, guarantee another debt, or authorize anyone to represent me financially. Their current agreement remained theirs to handle, but my involvement ended when it expired.

Corinne stayed angry for months. Eventually, she called without asking for money. She apologized not only for the birthday comment but for assuming my help would continue regardless of how she treated me. We began rebuilding slowly, with separate homes, separate finances, and doors that required invitations. I never regretted changing the locks. Blake had arrived holding an old key because he still believed access to my house—and my wallet—was permanent. That afternoon, he finally learned both had always been privileges, not rights.
