Spencer’s father did not congratulate me. He asked whether Clause AI was accepting strategic investors. Apparently, his firm had spent the previous month evaluating our platform for a major licensing agreement, and he had only realized that morning that its founder was the woman his future daughter-in-law’s family had deliberately excluded from brunch. He sounded almost embarrassed when he said, “I believe we may have seriously misunderstood who you are.”

Then Spencer called again. This time I answered. His voice had lost every trace of the confidence he used at Christmas when he called my revenue “small potatoes.” He explained that his firm’s managing partner had already circulated the Wall Street Journal feature internally and wanted an introduction. I told him Arjun handled partnership inquiries and gave him the company email address—the same public address available on our website.

My parents reacted differently. Mom cried and insisted she had only wanted Lindsay’s engagement weekend to feel special. Dad said they were proud of me and asked why I had “hidden” such an enormous success. I reminded him that I had talked about Clause AI for years. They had simply stopped listening whenever the conversation failed to sound prestigious enough. Success had not been hidden from them. They had dismissed it.

I did not attend Lindsay’s engagement party, and I did not accept the suddenly upgraded invitation that arrived two days later. Months afterward, Clause AI signed a licensing agreement with Spencer’s firm through ordinary negotiations handled by my team. I never used the deal to embarrass anyone. I didn’t need to. Easter had already done that quietly. My family had excluded me because they were afraid someone important might ask what I did. By lunchtime, the most important people at their table were asking how they could get a meeting with me.
