Dominic’s mother was crying so loudly I could hear her through the phone. She had taken my Camry to a dealership that afternoon and attempted to trade it toward a newer SUV. The problem was simple: the title was in my name. Dominic had given her a photocopied transfer form carrying what appeared to be my signature. My father’s quiet message beneath the table had gone to the attorney who handled the original purchase, asking him to verify whether any transfer had ever been authorized.

I had signed nothing. When Dominic ended the call, Dad finally spoke. “Did you forge my daughter’s name?” Dominic immediately claimed his mother had misunderstood and that he only intended to “handle the paperwork later.” I opened my phone and pulled up the registration. Then I told everyone the truth: Dominic had taken the keys from my purse two weeks earlier, claiming he needed the car serviced. He had never returned them.

The following morning, I contacted the dealership, my insurer, and an attorney. The attempted transfer was stopped, and the Camry was returned to me while the questionable paperwork was preserved for review. That discovery also forced me to examine our finances more carefully. I found thousands of dollars in payments to Dominic’s mother that had come from our joint account without my knowledge, including several charges he had repeatedly described as household expenses.

I did not leave the marriage because of one Toyota. I left because the car showed me how completely Dominic believed my property, income, and silence belonged to him. Dad apologized for not speaking immediately at dinner, but he told me he wanted evidence before making accusations. Three months later, I drove that same Camry to my new apartment with every account separated and my important documents locked safely away. Dominic had smiled while announcing that he had given away my car. He stopped smiling when he learned that marriage had never given him the right to give away me.
