Beside Trevor’s invoice, I placed my old laminated certification card from the engine plant where I had worked for nearly three decades. I had spent most of those years in quality control, inspecting engines before they ever left the factory. Gray hair had not erased what I knew. Trevor read my name, looked through the glass at my untouched car, and suddenly understood why I had asked so few questions. “This can’t possibly be genuine,” he whispered. I smiled. “Call the number on it if you’d like.”

He immediately reached for the invoice, but I put my hand over it. “No. I’d like the shop owner to see this first.” Trevor insisted he had simply made a preliminary diagnosis, although minutes earlier he had called the engine completely destroyed and demanded $8,000. The owner arrived twenty minutes later. When I explained that nobody had even opened the hood after moving my car into the lot, his expression hardened.

Another technician inspected the vehicle while I waited. The engine was not ruined. The problem was minor compared with Trevor’s claim and could be repaired for a few hundred dollars. The owner apologized, waived the diagnostic charge, and kept Trevor’s original invoice after I requested a copy for my records. He also promised to review previous estimates Trevor had written for other customers.

I paid for the legitimate repair and drove home that afternoon. My grandchildren laughed when I told them their grandmother had frightened a mechanic with something she carried in a floral purse. But it had never really been about proving I knew engines. Trevor’s mistake was believing knowledge had an age, a uniform, or a particular appearance. He saw an elderly woman and calculated how much he could take from her. He never considered that she might understand exactly what he was trying to sell.
