The envelope on top carried Derek’s name. Inside were copies of the papers I had found in Marlene’s purse: brokerage statements, a certificate of deposit, and a recent property-tax bill for a rental condo she owned outright. The woman who had spent two years telling my son she was “barely getting by” had more than $430,000 in liquid savings and rental income coming in every month. Yet Derek had been quietly paying her utilities, insurance, vacations, and now a $60,000 car.

Bridget opened the box before Derek reached the door. Beneath the documents was a second envelope containing a simple spreadsheet I had created overnight. On one side were the amounts Derek had spent supporting Marlene. On the other were the things he had asked me to cover during those same years—property taxes on his first home, emergency childcare, a furnace repair, and several “temporary” loans he had never repaid. The total exceeded $38,000.

Derek called before seven. At first he was angry that I had looked inside Marlene’s purse. Then he started reading. His voice changed. Marlene tried to explain that the money was “for retirement” and that she deserved to preserve her savings. Derek asked why my savings had always been treated differently. Why was I expected to use mine whenever the family needed help while hers remained untouchable?

I did not ask for the luxury car back, and I did not demand an expensive replacement gift. I simply stopped covering Derek’s emergencies and removed him from the account I had kept available for family assistance. Months later, he apologized and repaid part of what he owed. I kept the pink piggy bank on my kitchen shelf with the four dollars still inside. Not because it hurt anymore. Because it reminded me of the Christmas my son finally learned that being generous with someone else’s sacrifice was not generosity at all.
