While searching the glove compartment for the registration, I found a thick envelope wedged beneath the passenger seat. Inside were repair estimates dated months before she sold me the car. Every problem the mechanic had just described was listed there—failing transmission, overheating engine, electrical faults—with her name printed across the top. She hadn’t simply suspected something was wrong. She had been told exactly what needed fixing and apparently decided selling the car to me would be cheaper than repairing it herself.

I photographed every page before confronting her again. This time, I didn’t knock on her door. I sent one message: “I found the repair records you left in the car.” Suddenly, the woman who had laughed at me became very interested in talking. She called six times, insisting those estimates were “old” and claiming the car had been running perfectly afterward. Unfortunately for her, one invoice showed she had declined the recommended repairs less than three weeks before offering the vehicle to me.

The mechanic helped me document the current damage, and I gathered the advertisement, payment records, messages, and hidden estimates. After speaking with someone familiar with local consumer and fraud rules, I sent her copies of everything and told her I intended to pursue the matter formally unless we could resolve it. Two days later, she appeared at my door holding a cashier’s check for the full purchase price plus the diagnostic and towing costs. She didn’t laugh this time.

I returned the car only after the money cleared. A few weeks later, I found a reliable used vehicle through a dealership and had an independent mechanic inspect it before signing anything.

My neighbor thought she had found an exhausted single mother desperate enough to accept a bad deal.

What she forgot was that she had sold me the car—and accidentally left the proof inside it.
