That hard, brown, foam-like structure attached to the fence post is most likely a praying mantis egg case, known as an ootheca. Female mantises create these protective cases after laying their eggs, producing a frothy material that hardens around them and shields the developing young from weather, predators, and temperature changes.

Depending on the mantis species, a single ootheca can contain dozens or even hundreds of eggs. The mother typically attaches it firmly to a branch, fence post, wall, plant stem, or other sturdy surface. It may remain there throughout the colder months while the eggs develop safely inside. When temperatures warm, tiny mantis nymphs eventually emerge through small openings in the case.

That’s why scraping it off usually isn’t a good idea unless it’s somewhere that truly needs to be cleared. Praying mantises are beneficial garden predators that feed on many insects, including flies, moths, crickets, and other bugs. They aren’t dangerous to people and generally don’t damage plants.

If the egg case is in a safe location, the easiest thing to do is simply leave it alone and let nature take its course. If it absolutely has to be moved, keeping it outdoors and attached in roughly the same orientation is better than bringing it inside, where warmth could cause the eggs to hatch prematurely.

So that strange hardened blob isn’t fungus, expanding foam, or a weird growth from the wood.

It’s basically a tiny armored nursery packed with future praying mantises.
