“I’ve been told you’re refusing to cooperate with the team,” my boss said, folding his hands across the desk. I stared at him. My vacation had been approved four months earlier, and I had already paid for flights and a hotel. Apparently, my coworker Jenna suddenly needed the same week because her boyfriend had surprised her with a cruise. My boss suggested I “be flexible” because I didn’t have children and could travel another time. I calmly reminded him that my approved vacation wasn’t less important simply because I was traveling alone.

Then he slid a form toward me. He wanted me to voluntarily cancel my leave so Jenna could take it instead. I refused to sign. His expression changed immediately. “Then I may have to reconsider whether your vacation is still approved,” he said. Fortunately, I had saved every email—including the written approval from months earlier. I forwarded the entire chain to HR before leaving his office and asked them to confirm whether management could revoke approved leave simply to accommodate another employee’s last-minute plans.

By that afternoon, HR called me. My vacation remained approved. Even more interestingly, Jenna had apparently told our boss there was a “family emergency.” When HR asked for clarification because she wanted someone else’s already-approved dates, her story changed. It wasn’t an emergency at all. It was the cruise. My boss was reminded that employees couldn’t be pressured into surrendering approved leave just because another worker preferred those dates.

The following Monday, Jenna barely looked at me. My boss avoided mentioning the meeting entirely.

I went on my vacation exactly as planned.

And the best part? While sitting beside the hotel pool, I received an email from HR announcing a new policy: all vacation changes now required written consent from the employee whose approved dates would be affected.
