The key opened a small safe-deposit box Dorothea had rented years earlier. Inside were bank statements, property records, handwritten notes, and a sealed envelope with my name across the front. I sat inside the bank’s private room and read everything twice. Gavin had been moving money through accounts connected to another woman for almost two years. Dorothea had discovered it months earlier after noticing unexplained withdrawals from funds she had trusted him to manage.

Her letter hurt more than the statements. She apologized for not telling me sooner and explained that she had confronted Gavin privately, hoping he would confess and repair the damage himself. Instead, he had dismissed her concerns and gradually stopped visiting. She had kept copies because she was afraid he would eventually deny everything. At the bottom she had written, “You stayed when my own son did not. Please stop sacrificing your life for someone who treats your loyalty as guaranteed.”

By the time Gavin returned from his “negotiations,” the funeral had already taken place. I had gathered my personal documents, separated the accounts I could lawfully protect, and met with a divorce attorney. I left the wedding ring on top of the papers with Dorothea’s key beside it. I did not leave a dramatic letter. The evidence in that safe-deposit box said everything I had spent years refusing to admit.

Gavin called constantly once he realized I was gone. First he demanded explanations. Then he apologized. Finally, he begged me not to use Dorothea’s records in the financial review connected to our divorce. I let the attorneys handle it. I moved into a quiet apartment near my sister and kept only one thing from the old house: Dorothea’s final letter. Gavin had believed thirty unanswered calls would eventually be forgotten. Instead, the woman he abandoned in her final hours used one tiny silver key to make sure I finally stopped waiting for him too.
