Daddy looked at Ronnie and said, “From now on, you don’t send another dollar to Darla until I tell you where it goes.” Ronnie nodded immediately. Then Daddy asked him to bring copies of every rent payment from the last four years. By Tuesday, we had canceled checks and records showing more than $110,000 had been paid to Darla for Daddy’s land. None of it had reached his nursing-home account.

Daddy asked the facility for a complete billing history and called the attorney who had prepared his power of attorney. Because Daddy was still mentally competent, the attorney explained his options directly to him. Darla’s authority was revoked, new financial safeguards were put in place, and the missing rent payments were formally reviewed. I handed over my own records showing the $2,300 monthly gap I had covered from retirement.

When Darla finally called, she claimed she had used the money for “family expenses” and believed Daddy would have wanted to help. Daddy asked one question: “Did I ever tell you that?” She had no answer. Some of the money had gone toward her mortgage, vehicle payments, and renovations. Through the proper legal process, repayment arrangements were made, and Daddy’s future farm income began going directly toward his care.

The following month, I stopped writing that $2,300 check for the first time in four years. Daddy insisted on reimbursing me gradually for what I had paid, though I told him I never expected it back. He squeezed my hand and said, “That’s why you should.” Darla and I never returned to the relationship we once had. What hurt Daddy most was not the money. It was knowing his own daughter had watched her sister drain her retirement while collecting checks from land he had worked his entire life to build.
