“Aunt Shannon,” Brody said, “Uncle Darrell wanted you farming.” Then he handed me a folded notebook page covered in Darrell’s handwriting. Months before his death, Darrell had sketched crop rotations, equipment notes, and one sentence underlined twice: If anything happens to me, Shannon knows this place better than anybody. Brody said he had found it inside an old tractor manual while cleaning the farmhouse. Gene had told him to throw it away.

Brody did not ask permission from his father. He simply picked up one of the fifty-five-pound seed bags and carried it to my planter. By noon, he had helped me finish loading everything. The next morning, two neighbors arrived with equipment after hearing what had happened. Nobody offered charity. They traded labor, fuel, and time the way farmers had always done. Within days, the remaining acres were planted.

Across the road, Gene and Rusty had problems of their own. The bank pressure I had heard about was real. Darrell had handled more of the operation than either brother admitted, especially crop insurance, supplier contracts, and financial scheduling. Without him—and without me keeping the books—the partnership struggled. By midsummer, Gene called and asked whether I would return to manage their records. I declined.

That autumn, my ninety-five acres produced a respectable first harvest. It was not perfect, but it was mine. Kenzie rode beside me wearing Darrell’s faded cap while the combine moved through the rows. Brody eventually left his father’s operation and took a job nearby, but he still helped us during planting and harvest. Gene and Rusty had thought the $540,000 check was the price of removing me from the farm. Instead, it became the money that gave me land of my own—and proved Darrell had been right about me all along.
