The footage showed Marcus and Cheryl sitting at my dining table while I was at work. Cheryl removed papers from the realtor folder and placed an old document bearing my signature beside them. Then Marcus began practicing my name on scrap paper. I watched him trace it again and again while Cheryl talked about refinancing the house before I “started asking questions.” The final document they unfolded was an application using our home as collateral.

I called an attorney before leaving the previous owner’s bungalow. Then I contacted the lender listed on the paperwork and warned them that I had authorized no refinance, transfer, or new loan. The house had been purchased partly with proceeds from the condo I owned before marrying Marcus, and I had copies documenting every dollar. My attorney told me not to confront anyone until the relevant records and footage had been preserved.

When I returned home, Marcus asked whether I had remembered the groceries. I placed my keys on the counter and told him the lender had been notified. Cheryl’s face changed before Marcus even answered. That reaction told me enough. He eventually admitted they had been discussing using the home’s equity to cover debts he had hidden from me. Cheryl insisted they only planned to “explain everything later,” after the paperwork was ready.

There was no later. I separated my finances, preserved the video through counsel, and began ending a marriage that had apparently required my ignorance to function. Any disputed property and financial issues were handled through the proper legal process, but the attempted paperwork went nowhere. Months afterward, I drove past that house and remembered Marcus calling it our fresh start. He had been right in one way. Seven days after moving in, I finally started fresh—just not with him.
