My first call went to Harborview’s vehicle administrator. The BMW Paige drove was company-owned and had been assigned to her only because I authorized it. The second call went to the university billing office, where tuition had been paid through an education account established by my mother and controlled by me. The third went to our bank. Paige’s supplemental card and monthly $3,500 allowance were privileges, not obligations. I ended each arrangement according to its terms and documented everything.

By breakfast, Paige came downstairs holding her phone. “My card doesn’t work.” Ten minutes later, she learned the BMW had to be returned. Then the university notified her that future tuition payments would no longer come from my account. Gloria stormed into my office demanding I fix everything. I simply reminded her of the previous evening. “Paige isn’t my sister. You made that very clear. So her financial support is now your responsibility.”

That was when my father finally spoke. Richard admitted Gloria had assumed the mansion, staff, and family accounts belonged to him. In reality, the property was held through Harborview structures created by my mother, and I controlled the relevant household and discretionary accounts. Dad had enjoyed the comfort but had never corrected Gloria because, as he quietly admitted, he liked being treated as though he had built it all himself.

Paige eventually returned the car and found part-time work while finishing school through loans, scholarships, and help from her mother and my father. Months later, Gloria apologized, though our relationship never returned to what it had been. I did not restore the allowance or luxury privileges. She had told me I had no right to behave like Paige’s sister. I agreed. But she had forgotten something far more important: sisters may argue about manners. Benefactors are allowed to stop paying.
