“Where is Harold Mercer?” the chief asked. Nobody answered at first. Then the young coordinator near the entrance raised his hand and quietly explained that he had turned Dad away because mechanics were not included. The chief stared at him for several seconds. Then he pointed toward the empty chair. The place card read: Harold Mercer — Guest of Honor. Dad wasn’t simply invited to attend the anniversary. The department had planned to recognize his thirty-nine years of service.

The chief came outside personally with several retired firefighters behind him. Dad immediately tried to wave off the mistake, saying the young man had only followed the list he’d been given. But one retired captain opened Dad’s old notebook and reminded everyone about a winter night twenty-six years earlier when Dad stayed in the garage until nearly dawn repairing Engine 12 after its transmission failed. Hours later, that same truck responded to a house fire where three children were rescued.

When Dad finally entered, the entire room stood. The chief explained that no mechanic could claim credit for what firefighters did at emergencies, but every firefighter depended on someone making certain the trucks started, pumps worked, brakes held, and equipment arrived safely. Dad received a framed photograph of Station Six’s fleet and a plaque bearing the identification numbers of every truck he had maintained during his career.

The young coordinator apologized before dinner ended. Dad shook his hand and told him there were plenty of people behind every uniform who rarely appeared in photographs. On our drive home, I asked whether being turned away had hurt. Dad looked at the plaque resting across his knees and smiled. “A little,” he admitted. “But I never fixed those trucks so somebody would remember my name. I fixed them so everybody else could come home.”
