The page contained one sentence: “You asked me not to call you my future husband, so I’ve stopped planning as though you are.” Beneath it was a list of every wedding arrangement I had personally funded and legally controlled. The venue, hotel block, transportation, planner, entertainment, and several guest services were no longer authorized under Lucas’s name. I had not destroyed contracts or created penalties for anyone else. I had simply withdrawn my own approvals and payments where I was entitled to do so.

Lucas looked around the restaurant as though someone would explain the joke. Then he called me. I watched from upstairs as his confidence disappeared with each unanswered ring. Diane read the letter over his shoulder, while Nina suddenly became very interested in her water glass. The restaurant manager then approached Lucas privately and confirmed that the separate wedding-related hospitality arrangements he had expected to use that weekend were no longer attached to his account.

I had spent years loving the man he used to be while financing the celebration of the man he had become. The envelope on his chair did not humiliate him. It simply forced him to read, in writing, what he had already told me himself: he did not want to be called my future husband. I finally believed him.
