Standing on the porch were my attorney, Melissa Grant, and a licensed investigator I had hired forty-eight hours earlier. Neil stood immediately. Joanna went completely white. Victor looked between them and me, clearly understanding even less than I had two days earlier. Melissa placed a folder on the coffee table. Inside were hotel receipts, photographs, and dated records showing Neil and Joanna had already been meeting privately for nearly six months. The “spouse swap” had not been an experiment. It was their attempt to make an existing affair look mutually agreed upon.

Victor stared at Joanna. “You told me Neil came up with this yesterday.” She began crying. Neil tried blaming me for hiring someone to follow him, but the investigator calmly explained that the evidence came largely from publicly accessible records and observations made in ordinary locations. One reservation hurt most: a weekend Neil had told me he was visiting his brother. Joanna had supposedly been attending a work conference that same weekend.

Then I explained why I had agreed to the swap. I needed them comfortable enough to stop deleting messages and changing their story. I had already copied our financial records and spoken with counsel about my options. Victor immediately picked up his overnight bag. “There’s not going to be any swap,” he said. For the first time all evening, Neil looked genuinely frightened.

Joanna left with Victor, though they drove separately. Neil remained behind until I handed him the suitcase I had packed. It contained his clothes, toiletries, and copies of the information my attorney wanted him to have. Our separation began properly from there. Months later, Victor and I occasionally spoke, but nothing romantic ever happened. Neil had suggested exchanging spouses because he believed changing the rules could erase what he had already done. Instead, that strange proposal gave me the first clue that the game had started long before anyone asked for my permission.
