The officer asked one more question. “Did they give you an account number?” I shook my head because I had hung up before they could. Then he explained why they were there. After I refused, my parents had called Paige. She had wired the full $20,000 before sunrise. There was just one problem: Derek had never been in an emergency room. He had been sitting at my parents’ house the entire time. Paige realized something was wrong when she called the hospital herself and discovered there was no patient under his name.

The money had gone to an account connected to one of Derek’s acquaintances. Police were now documenting who had participated, what each person had been told, and whether the transfer could be recovered. I handed over screenshots of my parents’ calls and repeated the only question I had asked: “Which hospital?” The officers exchanged a look. Apparently, Paige had asked that same question after sending the money. My parents had given her three different answers.

By afternoon, Mom was calling nonstop. Her first voicemail begged me to tell police it had been a misunderstanding. Dad’s was angrier. He said Derek had “serious financial trouble” and they were simply trying to protect him. Eventually the truth emerged: Derek owed money he could not repay, and my parents had decided another fabricated family emergency was easier than admitting they wanted me to rescue him again.

I gave investigators whatever information they requested and stayed out of the financial mess that followed. Paige recovered part of her transfer through the bank’s fraud process, but our parents’ relationship with both daughters changed permanently. Mom later asked why I had been able to hang up so easily. I told her it wasn’t easy at all. I had simply spent years learning that a genuine emergency can survive one reasonable question. A lie usually cannot.
