The caller was a Hartford police detective. My former husband had suffered a medical emergency at Birchwood Lane and been taken to the hospital. During the confusion, a woman named Katherine had attempted to remove several boxes from his locked study, claiming they belonged to her. Officers stopped the dispute and documented what remained. One box carried my name. Inside were copies of property transfers, account records, and correspondence with the attorney who had created the company that now supposedly owned our $4.5 million home.

Priscilla obtained the relevant records through the proper legal process. The dates were devastating. Months before asking for divorce, my husband had discussed moving the house and other assets beyond my reach. Emails referred directly to keeping property “outside the marital estate,” while additional statements showed money being shifted through entities that had never been fully disclosed during our case. Katherine was not merely the mysterious “K.” She had been helping him coordinate parts of his new life before our marriage officially ended.

My attorneys returned to court with the new evidence. Nothing changed overnight, but the financial judgment was reopened for review. The house transfer, disclosures, and related transactions were examined independently, and my former husband’s earlier version of events began falling apart under documents carrying dates, signatures, and instructions. Eventually, I received a substantially revised settlement reflecting assets that should have been considered from the beginning. I never needed to move back into Birchwood Lane.

The grandchildren were another matter. My son and daughter eventually admitted their father had pressured them to restrict contact because he wanted me isolated and exhausted enough to stop fighting. I did not punish them, but rebuilding trust took time. At seventy-nine, I bought a smaller home near Ruth with a porch facing the mountains. My former husband had smiled when he thought he had taken everything. What he never understood was that a house can be transferred on paper. The truth leaves a trail.
