The strange wooden object in the photo is an old-fashioned washboard, a household tool that was once used for washing clothes by hand long before electric washing machines became common.

The large ridged metal panel in the center is the most important part. To use it, people would place the washboard inside or against a tub filled with warm, soapy water. Wet clothes were then rubbed repeatedly up and down across the corrugated surface. Those raised ridges helped loosen dirt, sweat, and stains from the fabric while the soap did the rest of the cleaning.

The wooden frame gave the board strength and provided a place to grip or rest it against the side of a wash tub. Some versions were made with galvanized metal, while earlier examples could use glass, wood, or other textured surfaces. Washing an entire family’s clothing this way was exhausting work and could take hours, especially when heavier fabrics, bedding, or work clothes were involved.

Washboard use began fading as mechanical and electric washing machines became more affordable, but these tools didn’t disappear completely. Some people still use them for hand-washing delicate garments, camping, emergency laundry, or heavily stained clothing. They’ve also become popular as rustic decorations and collectibles.

And there’s another surprising connection: musicians eventually discovered that the ridged metal surface could be scraped rhythmically with metal thimbles or similar objects, turning the humble washboard into a percussion instrument.

So this yard-sale mystery isn’t some obscure workshop tool.
