Rosalind’s desperate call came after the mortgage payment failed because I had removed my checking account from the automatic draft. The utilities were still running, nobody had been thrown into darkness, but for the first time in years the bills were landing where they belonged. She demanded that I “fix everything immediately.” I calmly reminded her that the house, mortgage, and household expenses were not mine. I had only been paying them voluntarily.

That afternoon, Harrison sent me a folder he had assembled from the financial records I had given him. The real problem was not Rosalind’s house. It was Grayson and Camille. Over the previous eighteen months, Rosalind had covered nearly $87,000 of their expenses—luxury trips, car payments, credit cards, and repeated transfers into Grayson’s struggling business. She had refinanced debt and then leaned on me to keep her own household afloat. Sebastian knew far more than he had ever admitted.

When I confronted him, he whispered, “Mom was trying to protect Grayson.”

“And you were using me to protect everyone,” I replied.

I filed for divorce shortly afterward and stopped every voluntary payment connected to his family.

They had called me selfish for leaving dinner hungry.

Two days without my money finally showed them who had really been feeding the entire table.
