“Heading out,” I told him. His name was Thomas Bennett, seventy-three, a widower from Vermont taking his first Christmas trip since losing his wife. By Amsterdam, we had become friends. We toured museums, drank hot chocolate beside the canals, and laughed when we both got lost trying to find our hotel in Brussels. On Christmas Day in Paris, another traveler photographed us sitting together beneath the lights near the Seine. For once, I looked genuinely happy. I posted the picture without thinking much about it.

My phone exploded before breakfast. Daniel called six times. Claire sent three messages asking, “Who is that man?” Even Claire’s mother apparently wanted to know. I stared at the screen and almost laughed. Nobody had worried about me spending Christmas alone, but suddenly everyone was deeply interested because a silver-haired stranger was sitting beside me in Paris. Daniel finally texted, “Mom, are you dating someone? Why didn’t you tell me?” I replied, “Thomas is my friend. I didn’t realize I needed permission to enjoy Christmas.”

The truth came out after I returned home. Claire admitted she had expected me to remain available whenever they needed babysitting, help with errands, or someone to watch their house during trips. Seeing me traveling frightened her because it meant I might build a life that did not revolve around their schedule. Daniel looked embarrassed when she said it aloud. He apologized for allowing “one Christmas” to become a message that I was optional.

Thomas and I continued speaking after the tour. We visited each other several times that spring, but I refused to rush anything. Whether friendship became romance mattered less than what the trip had already given me. The following Christmas, Daniel invited me months in advance. I thanked him, then told him I already had plans. Thomas and I were going to Vienna. For nine years after Walter died, I had waited for my family to make room for me. Paris taught me something simpler: I was allowed to make plans of my own.
