Rohan crossed the ballroom without looking at anyone else. When he reached me, he smiled, took my hand, and said, “There you are, my wife.” The silence around us was almost physical. Vikram’s face lost color first. He had spent years trying to secure investment from Bhatia Global Ventures and had spoken about Rohan like he was untouchable. Now the man he had been desperate to impress was standing beside the woman he had just mocked.

Rohan and I had married quietly three years earlier after meeting through an education project my company helped design. I had never hidden the marriage. I simply stopped sharing my private life with people who had treated my divorce like entertainment. When Rohan learned about the reunion, he had agreed to sponsor it only after I told him I was finally ready to attend. The handwritten line on my invitation had come from an old classmate who knew exactly why I had avoided these gatherings.

Vikram attempted to recover quickly. He introduced himself, mentioned his company, and tried to turn the moment into a business conversation. Rohan listened politely, then said investment proposals could go through the normal review process like everyone else’s. No promises. No favors. Shreya stood quietly beside Vikram, no longer smiling. Later, she approached me alone and apologized for repeating things she had never bothered to verify.

That evening, I did not feel victorious because Vikram looked embarrassed. I felt free because his opinion had finally become irrelevant. Rohan and I left early, stopping for roadside chai before going home. Ten years earlier, Vikram had convinced me I was difficult to love. The reunion did not prove him wrong because I had remarried someone powerful. It proved him wrong because I had rebuilt a life in which I no longer needed him—or anyone else—to decide my worth.
