Mom finally told me Roland and Priya had stopped treating her like a guest during the second week. First came the cooking and laundry. Then Roland started asking questions about her house: what it was worth, whether the mortgage was paid off, and why she needed to keep it when she was “living with family now.” The night she left, he placed paperwork in front of her that would have given him authority to handle the property if she became “unable to manage things herself.”

Mom refused to sign.

That was when Priya told her she was ungrateful and Roland took her car keys, saying she was too upset to drive. Mom grabbed whatever clothes she could carry and called a neighbor for a ride. Her purse, medications, and important documents were still inside Roland’s house.

She asked for her belongings, and when Roland refused to return the keys immediately, we contacted local authorities for assistance documenting the situation. Mom then met with her own attorney, revoked any old financial permissions Roland might still have, and made it clear she was returning to her own home.

Roland called me selfish afterward.

I reminded him of one simple fact.

Mom never needed somewhere to live.

He needed access to what she owned.
