Gary took one step toward Hank, then stopped when Hank calmly raised a hand. “We’re not looking for trouble,” he said. “She invited us. That’s enough.” I pulled the certified letter receipt from Grandpa’s coat pocket and handed it to Gary. Darren had been notified weeks earlier that he had no authority to grant access to the land. The posted signs were new, bright, and impossible to miss. “You paid the wrong person,” I told him. “I’m sorry about the money, but you need to get it back from Darren.”

Lonnie cursed under his breath. Phil looked embarrassed. Gary stared at the receipt, then finally admitted Darren had promised them I would “get over it.” Apparently he had been collecting $4,500 every season since our divorce, telling everyone the hunting rights remained his because he had built several stands during the marriage. Gary calculated aloud that Darren had taken more than thirteen thousand dollars from them over three years.

They left without another argument. I did not call police or make a spectacle of it. I simply documented that they had been told to leave and sent Darren another written notice making clear that any future attempt to lease, advertise, or grant access to my property would be handled formally. Gary later recovered part of his money after confronting Darren himself.

That morning, I walked Hank back to Grandpa’s ladder stand. Cody and Ray settled into theirs before sunrise fully broke across the ridge. Nobody cared that I didn’t hunt. That had never been the point. Grandpa left me 120 acres because he trusted me to decide what happened there. Darren had spent three years treating my inheritance like something that still belonged to him. Opening morning was the first time I understood how simple ownership could be: sometimes all it requires is finally saying no—and meaning it.
