Brenda finally climbed out and asked Dad why “that woman” was sitting on the porch. Mom answered before he could. “Because I own half this house.” Brenda stared at her, then at me. Dad tried to explain that Mom was only staying temporarily, but I corrected him immediately. Her apartment lease was ending, she was retiring, and this was the home she had helped purchase. She was not visiting. She was moving in.

Brenda’s sons stepped down from the truck looking increasingly uncomfortable. One of them asked where their rooms were supposed to be. Dad pointed toward the back of the house, but there was only one available bedroom. That was when Brenda realized he had promised far more than he could actually offer. She asked who paid the mortgage, taxes, insurance, and utilities. I told her the truth: Mom and I owned the property, and Dad had lived there rent-free for six years.

Brenda turned toward him slowly. Apparently he had told her the house belonged entirely to him and that I simply “helped with expenses.” She had already ended her lease based on that promise. Her anger was not directed at Mom or me anymore. She told her sons to get back into the truck, then informed Dad she would not be moving anywhere until he could provide proof of whatever ownership he had claimed.

Dad stayed in the back bedroom for several more months under clear household boundaries and began contributing toward utilities. Eventually he moved into a small apartment closer to Brenda, though their relationship never fully recovered from that morning. Mom remained in Hazel’s house. By spring, she had planted tomatoes beside the porch and hung yellow curtains in the front bedroom. She never asked Dad to leave. She simply stopped acting as though his comfort mattered more than her ownership. Six years earlier, we bought that house to keep him from becoming homeless. We had never agreed to surrender it to him.
