The person waiting in our kitchen was a process server. Nathan was handed the divorce petition along with notice that my attorney was seeking temporary financial protections while the disputed transfers were reviewed. By then, the forensic accountant had traced more than $96,000 through accounts connected to Loretta’s property-management company. The red-door house had been purchased partly with money moved from accounts I believed were funding our own mortgage, renovations, and retirement.

The photograph finally made sense. Nathan and Loretta had planned for her to move into our new house while the red-door property was rented for income. But the records suggested something worse: Nathan had been discussing refinancing our home and using additional equity to finish paying expenses connected to Loretta’s property. My signature appeared on a preliminary document I had never approved. Nothing had been completed yet, but my attorney immediately notified the relevant institutions that I disputed any authorization made in my name.

Nathan called repeatedly that night. First he denied everything. Then he claimed the red-door house was simply an “investment for the family.” Finally, he admitted Loretta knew about the transfers because the property was intended to provide her with retirement income. When I asked why my money had been involved without my knowledge, he said, “I knew you’d say no.” That sentence ended whatever remained of the marriage for me.

The divorce took time, and the financial questions were handled through records, attorneys, and proper review rather than one dramatic confrontation. The hidden property and transfers became part of that process, while the house Nathan and I had purchased was dealt with separately. Months later, I found the photograph again among documents returned by counsel. On the back, Loretta’s handwriting still read, Don’t worry, she’ll never look here. She had been right about one thing: I had not looked there for years. But once I finally did, I stopped looking away from everything else.
