The object was an old phone wrapped in a metal battery case. Taped underneath it was Caleb’s note: “Grandma, please keep this. I’m scared Mom will find it.” My hands shook as I charged the phone. Inside were videos Caleb had recorded before coming to stay with me—his parents screaming at each other, doors slamming, and one clip where Priya told Elliot the children were being sent away for the summer because she “couldn’t deal with them while everything was falling apart.”
There had been no major renovation.
Elliot and Priya were separating and had hidden the truth from everyone, including the children. Worse, Caleb had apparently overheard arguments about who would “take” which child if they split. He had carried the phone all summer because he believed the recordings might keep him and Nora from being separated.
I did not confront Elliot immediately. I called him and calmly asked whether the children were safe, then arranged to speak with both parents without Caleb present. I also kept the phone exactly as I found it and encouraged them to involve a family counselor rather than making the children carry adult problems.
That evening, Caleb finally called me.
“Did you find it?”
“Yes.”
His voice became tiny.
“Please don’t let them split me and Nora up.”
That was when I understood what he had really hidden beneath my mattress.
Not a phone.
A ten-year-old’s emergency plan.
