If your phone keeps ringing once in the middle of the night and then stopping, there’s a good chance it’s not a mysterious person trying to reach you at all. It may be a “one-ring” scam, sometimes called a Wangiri scam. The idea is simple: an automated system calls your number, lets it ring once or twice, and hangs up before you can answer. The goal is to make you curious enough to call back.
That callback can sometimes connect you to an international or premium-rate number, creating expensive charges while the scammer receives a share of the money. Caller ID doesn’t always protect you either, because scammers can spoof numbers to make a call appear local or familiar.
The safest response is usually not to call an unfamiliar number back simply because it rang once. If the caller genuinely needs to reach you, they can normally leave a voicemail, send a legitimate message, or call again. You can block repeated numbers, and many phones and carriers also offer spam-call filtering. The FTC recommends ignoring unwanted calls and using blocking tools when appropriate.
Of course, not every one-ring call is a scam. Wrong numbers, automated systems, or accidental calls happen too. But repeated late-night calls that immediately disconnect are a reason to be cautious.
So if this has happened several nights in a row, don’t panic—but don’t let curiosity take over either.
Check for voicemail, avoid calling suspicious numbers back, and block the caller if the pattern continues.
