Those viral tricks claiming toothpaste, baking soda, or household polish can magically remove scratches from eyeglasses sound convenient, but they can actually make the problem worse. Most modern prescription lenses have protective coatings for glare reduction, UV protection, scratch resistance, or blue-light filtering. Abrasive substances can damage those coatings and leave the lenses cloudy or covered with even more fine scratches.
A true scratch means material has physically been removed from the lens surface. You generally can’t simply “wipe” that missing material back into place. Some DIY methods appear to work temporarily because they polish or fill tiny surface imperfections, but the result may distort vision or damage the lens coating. Toothpaste is especially risky because many formulas contain abrasive particles designed to scrub teeth, not delicate optical lenses.
