New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sharply criticized Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race just two days before Election Day. Mamdani accused Stevens of betraying working-class voters, arguing that issues including health care, housing and household expenses were at stake in Tuesday’s election. Stevens announced Sunday that she would support Rogers rather than Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, whom she narrowly lost to in the August primary.
Stevens said she remained a Democrat but could no longer support El-Sayed following an increasingly bitter dispute over Israel and an outside political advertisement she considered antisemitic. She had demanded that El-Sayed condemn the ad, which was produced independently of his campaign. El-Sayed said he disagreed with its contents but accused Stevens of reopening divisions from the primary. His campaign subsequently asked her not to attend remaining campaign events.
The endorsement triggered unusually strong reactions from Democratic leaders. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Stevens’ move a “despicable betrayal,” while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said she had blindsided colleagues and isolated herself from House Democrats. Several members of Stevens’ staff also resigned following her announcement. Republicans, meanwhile, welcomed the endorsement, with Rogers praising Stevens for crossing party lines.
The political fallout also produced an immediate fundraising response. El-Sayed’s campaign reported raising more than $2.4 million on Sunday from over 65,000 donations, including nearly 30,000 first-time contributors. The campaign said the average donation was approximately $37.
Stevens has defended her decision and said she does not believe El-Sayed is suited to serve in the Senate. She has also rejected suggestions that pressure from her fiancé or others drove the endorsement. El-Sayed, for his part, has attempted to shift attention back toward issues such as affordability and health care rather than the intraparty dispute.
The confrontation has turned Michigan’s final campaign days into a highly visible Democratic Party dispute. With the state choosing a successor to retiring Sen. Gary Peters, the Stevens endorsement has added another unpredictable factor to a race already carrying national significance for the fight over control of the Senate.
