By December, I had done more than change my will. Howard helped me create a charitable trust in Thomas’s name to support widowed parents returning to school and older adults who needed short-term help remaining independent at home. I also sold the large house and bought a smaller condominium near Judith, the grocery store, and my doctor. I hired help twice a month and arranged transportation when my arthritis made driving difficult. Natalie had told me to manage on my own. I discovered I could.
She learned about the house on New Year’s Eve. Natalie arrived without warning and found strangers unloading furniture into the place where she had grown up. She called me immediately, furious. “Mom, why would you sell the house without telling me?” I reminded her that it belonged to me. Then she asked the question I had expected. “What happens to it when you’re gone?” That was when I told her there would be no house waiting for her.
Natalie came to my condominium the following morning. She cried, argued, and accused Greg of influencing her priorities. Eventually, I showed her the records of everything I had given her over the years. I explained that I was not punishing her for refusing groceries. That conversation had simply forced me to notice a relationship where my money was welcomed more reliably than I was.
I left education accounts for Lily and Owen directly, protected so their parents could not use them for unrelated expenses. Everything else would eventually support the trust bearing Thomas’s name. Natalie and I did not repair our relationship overnight, but months later she began visiting without asking for money. I never restored the old estate plan. My daughter had been right about one thing: I did need to learn to manage on my own. I simply stopped believing that doing so required leaving everything to someone who treated my independence as convenient until it affected her inheritance.
I finally returned Dad’s call after the fourteenth attempt. His voice had lost every trace of Christmas-night authority. The bank had notified Hartwell Industrial that the ownership…
