Those tiny bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash have been a familiar part of hotel rooms for decades. They seem convenient, clean, and completely harmless, especially because they usually appear unopened beside the sink or shower. However, hotel workers have occasionally warned travelers to take a closer look before using them. The concern is not that every miniature toiletry bottle is dangerous, but that the way these products are handled can vary greatly from one hotel to another.
In reputable hotels, individual toiletries should normally be replaced between guests, particularly when the packaging has been opened or damaged. Problems can arise when bottles do not have proper tamper-resistant seals. A previous guest could theoretically open a bottle, remove some of the product, add something else, and place it back without housekeeping noticing. While incidents like this appear to be uncommon, the possibility is one reason some experienced travelers inspect the cap and seal before using complimentary toiletries.
